The EMSB and the CSSDM Enter into a 24-Month Lease Agreement for St. Dorothy School in St. Michel District
The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) and the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal (CSSDM) today announced a 24-month lease agreement for the former St. Dorothy Elementary School premises, located at 8961 6th avenue, in the northeast Montreal district of St. Michel.
Over the past two years, the EMSB undertook a long-term planning exercise and a wide-ranging consultation focused on the enrolment figures in its schools across the territory. Following this process, EMSB students attending St. Dorothy School were twinned with students from nearby Our Lady of Pompei School, beginning with the 2020-2021 academic year. In this context, the premises of St. Dorothy are made available for the next two years following which the EMSB plans to implement a new educational program for students with special needs.
The CSSDM identified that the availability of the St. Dorothy facility met its temporary needs to relocate a portion of the activities of the Sophie-Barat School while major renovations are planned.
“We are very pleased of this win-win agreement with our counterparts at the CSSDM that will result in additional revenues for the EMSB until we can implement new educational programs for students with special needs at St. Dorothy School starting in the 2022-2023 school year,” said EMSB Trustee Marlene Jennings. “I would like to thank our colleagues at the CSSDM for the efficiency and collegiality with which this agreement was reached.”
“Ensuring the stability, security and continuity of schooling for students during major renovations of a school is a major concern of the CSSDM,” added CSSDM Director General Robert Gendron. “We welcome the opening of the EMSB to sharing infrastructure that will allow us to adequately fulfill our educational mission while continuing the major rehabilitation of one of our schools.”
It should be noted that the students of the CSSDM had already been occupying certain premises at St. Dorothy School for five years. Under the agreement announced today, the students and staff of the CSSDM will occupy all of the school’s premises and offices for the next two school years.
Details of the EMSB plan to provide services for students with special needs at St. Dorothy School two years from now will be announced at a later date.
